How TikTok's Algorithm Actually Affects Brands
You cannot game distribution, but you can consistently give it what it needs. A practical read on what matters and what doesn't.
Treat the recommendation system as a very literal audience-matching machine. It shows a piece of content to a small group, watches what they do, and expands or stops based on that behaviour. Everything useful for brands follows from that one mechanic.
The signals that carry weight
- Watch time relative to length — a 12-second video watched fully often outperforms a 45-second video watched halfway.
- Re-watches and loops, which reward tight edits and endings that feed back into the opening.
- Shares and saves, which indicate the content did a job for the viewer beyond entertainment.
- Comment depth — replies and threads, not just volume.
What this means for how you make things
Front-load the specific claim. A generic opening asks the viewer to invest attention on faith; a specific one trades information for time. "This is why your foundation separates by 2pm" earns the next three seconds. "We're so excited to share our new launch" does not.
Then match length to substance. If the idea resolves in eleven seconds, publish eleven seconds. Padding to hit an arbitrary duration reduces completion, which is the metric that actually gates distribution.
Brand accounts vs creator accounts
A brand account carries expectation: viewers know it's advertising and decide within a beat whether to allow it. Creator accounts borrow a relationship. The practical implication is that the same script often needs a different delivery in each place, and that whitelisting creator content for paid distribution frequently beats running the same idea from the brand handle.
Search is now part of the equation
A growing share of product research starts in in-app search. That makes spoken words, on-screen text, captions and cover frames function as keyword surfaces. Say the category term out loud. Put it on screen. Write a caption a human would actually search.
What not to optimise for
Posting time, hashtag volume and follower count are weak levers compared to the first two seconds of the video. Spend your effort where the machine is actually looking.
The uncomfortable truth is that consistency of output plus honest evaluation beats cleverness. Brands that publish twenty genuinely different ideas a month learn faster than brands that agonise over four.
